How to promote your subscription on your Shopify store

We’ve spoken to some merchants who set up subscriptions as an interesting new experiment on their Shopify store and then hear crickets. While there are many apps you can set up on Shopify that prove (or disprove) their value on their own — like a discount spinner that pops up when users land on your site — subscriptions are really more like a new product offering.

With any new product or offering, there are some important steps you can take to make sure your existing customers and people who land on your site as a result of your marketing know about them. Subscriptions are worth the extra effort and real estate because of the increased Life Time Value (LTV) that they unlock for customers who end up purchasing them. Here are a few tips that can help you build awareness of your new subscriptions.

Create a “Featured Product” section on your home page. When you initially designed your online store, you likely added, edited and removed some sections from the home page. It is often not one of the default sections, but there is usually a “Featured Product” section that can be added. If you’ve enabled subscriptions for a specific product, you can add this section to show the product and its subscription options right on your home page. This is a great way to cut out the extra navigation required for your customers to find the value you are offering them with a subscription.

Show an announcement bar with a link. If you’re not already using it, announcement bars are a great way to draw attention to something new that you’re offering. To enable it when you’re editing your online store, click “Header” and then “Show Announcement.” You can type some text in like “Now offering 5% off when you subscribe monthly!” and add a link to a subscription product so that when users click it they will be taken directly there.

Create a special tab or filter for subscriptions. Following along on the theme of making subscriptions easy to find, some brands create a top level menu item that will take users to a list of products that offer subscriptions. To do this there are a few steps:

  • Add a consistent tag to any products you wish to show, like “Subscription”
  • Create a collection for these products that filters by the tag
  • On your online store, go to “Header” and then “Edit Menu”
  • Add a menu item called “Subscriptions” and add the collection you created

This will also automatically make it so users can filter by the tag you created when they’re looking at your full product catalog, which can help with discoverability as well.

Send an email campaign. Who better to target for your new subscription than your previous customers? If you can segment by ones that have purchased your product more than once, then you can be even more targeted in your messaging. Send them an email announcing your subscriptions and the incentive you’re offering, with a direct link to the product(s) that they can purchase subscriptions too. You never know, you may be making someone’s day!

All of these methods are dependent on customers already coming to your site or having purchased from you before. If you’re looking to find new customers, then experimenting with paid marketing, brand partnerships, and other forms of outreach might be the way to go. Stay tuned and we’ll cover tips that can help you with customer acquisition in the future.
